Bach, Beethoven, Schumann

Favorites from the Germanic repertoire are brought to life by cellist Jennifer Shaw and Artistic Director Shinae Kim. The performance will feature Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A Major, Schumann's Fantasiestücke Op. 73, and selections from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach.

Jennifer Shaw is a freelance cellist based in Brooklyn, New York, most recently performing with the Quintessence of Dust Theatre Company, Baldwin Festival Chorus, and with comedian Eliot Glazer for Haunting Renditions Live, based on his web series of the same name. Past engagements include performing in concert with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and the Eagles, as well as recording for the original motion picture soundtracks to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), Noah (2014), and The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014).

Jennifer received her Master's degree from New York University, where she served as an adjunct professor of cello, and her Bachelor's from the University of Notre Dame. Her teachers have included Edward Arron, Eileen Moon, and Karen Buranskas.

 

Pianist Shinae Kim performs frequently across the United States and internationally. She commands a wide-ranging solo repertoire, placing special emphasis on masterpieces of the Austro-Germanic tradition. Spanning the Baroque to the present day, it includes both volumes of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, the complete Beethoven sonatas, and the Schoenberg Piano Concerto.

Ms. Kim debuted with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra at age 11, and has appeared as soloist with the Coro Symphony in Puerto Rico, the International Chamber Orchestra in California, and the Brevard Repertory Orchestra in North Carolina. A sought-after collaborator, she has been featured on WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase with flutist Conor Nelson and has performed with ensembles at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, and Merkin Hall. 

Ms. Kim holds a Bachelor of Music degree from The Boston Conservatory, a Master's in Music Education from New York University, and most recently completed the doctoral program at Stony Brook University. She also attended the Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden bei Wien, Austria, where she studied Lieder intensively with some of the world’s leading experts, including Elly Ameling and Helmut Deutsch.

A passionate educator, Ms. Kim's career includes work as an independent consultant at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts and as a teaching artist at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Secondary School for Arts and Technology. She is currently the Music Director at Union Temple of Brooklyn and an adjunct faculty member at New York University and Hebrew Union College. 

In 2017, Ms. Kim founded the non-profit organization An die Musik NYC and serves as its artistic director. AdM NYC is a concert series bringing the people of New York City high-quality classical music at affordable prices. It presents internationally renowned performers alongside rising talents from the NYC community.
